Broken down by course - what your degree actually needs, and where a £400 laptop stops being a bargain

Business, Humanities, Social Sciences and Law

Best laptop for college assignments and Microsoft Office without overpaying under £600 - is HP OmniBook 7 Aero 13" Next Gen AI Laptop - AMD Ryzen™ AI 7, 16GB

Guide price: £599

This laptop is well-suited for your school and coursework tasks, with its AMD Ryzen AI 7 processor for lectures, research and writing up. Strong multi-core performance keeps it responsive when you have readings, notes and a browser open together, and 16 GB of RAM means note-taking, research tabs and Office run side by side.

It clears the requirement exactly where it counts. 16 GB of memory meets the floor - and that floor is the reason a cheaper machine is not worth it for a humanities or law student, because an 8 GB laptop with forty tabs and a PDF reader open is the specific experience people mean when they say their laptop is slow. Up to 12 hours and 15 minutes of battery is comfortably past the eight-hour minimum, and at under 1 kg it is less than half the 2 kg weight limit. It is, in the most literal sense, a laptop that lasts through college.

For law students there is one thing to check before you buy: proctored exam software such as ExamSoft Examplify or Respondus has its own list of supported systems, which varies by institution. This runs Windows 11 Home, which is the safest answer, but confirm your university's list. Westlaw and Lexis run in a browser and will not be the problem.

Nursing, Medical and Allied Health

Best laptop for carrying between lectures, the library and cafes all day under £600 - is HP OmniBook 7 Aero 13" Next Gen AI Laptop - AMD Ryzen™ AI 7, 16GB

Guide price: £599

This laptop is well-suited for your travel and commuting tasks, with up to 12 hours and 15 minutes of battery life so you are not hunting for a socket between a lecture and a shift. The sub-1 kg chassis barely registers in a bag, and the 1 TB SSD holds the files you need with you offline.

This is the only machine at this price that clears all four of those minimums, and the weight is why. A 1.6 kg limit rules out most 15-inch laptops at this price outright; the Aero is under 1 kg, which is not close to the line, it is a different category altogether. The 1 TB of storage is double the 512 GB floor.

For clinical simulation software and lockdown exam browsers, the same advice applies as for law: check your school's supported list first. Windows 11 Home is the broadest base to be standing on.

Light gaming and downtime

Best laptop for uni work and light gaming like Minecraft, Roblox and Valorant under £600 - is HP OmniBook 7 Aero 13" Next Gen AI Laptop - AMD Ryzen™ AI 7, 16GB

Guide price: £599

This laptop is well-suited for your light gaming tasks, with its AMD Ryzen AI 7 processor for titles like Minecraft, Roblox and Rocket League. Strong multi-core performance means lighter games run smoothly alongside everything else, and 16 GB of RAM lets games and your browser stay open at the same time.

The honest framing: the graphics here are built into the processor rather than being a separate card. That is fine for the titles named above and for an evening off. It is not a gaming laptop, and nothing at £600 is.

If your degree is Game Development, this is the wrong page entirely. That course needs a proper graphics card with 12 GB of its own memory so that Unity and Unreal can preview your work as you build it, and nothing at this price has one. Our guide for STEM and PhD students covers it, starting at £1,999.

Everyday use - and the one recommendation to be careful with

Best laptop for browsing, Netflix and YouTube between lectures under £600 - is HP ChromeBook 15" - Intel® Core™ i3 N305, 8GB, 128GB, FHD

Guide price: £400

This laptop is well-suited for your everyday and entertainment tasks, with up to 11 hours of battery life so it lasts through the day without charging, and a 144 Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and streaming. A 15.6-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) screen for £400 is a lot of screen for the money.

For that specific job - browsing, streaming, video calls - it is the best buy on this page. It is worth being blunt about what it is not, though, because £400 is tempting enough that people talk themselves into it.

It falls short of the minimum for every single course in this guide. 8 GB of memory is half the 16 GB needed for Business, Humanities, Social Sciences and Law. The 128 GB of storage is a quarter of the 512 GB that Nursing and MBA students need. And ChromeOS is ruled out by name for Computer Science and for MBAs - the first because those courses expect you to run Linux, the second because heavy Excel modelling and Bloomberg access do not work there. On the 8 GB versus 16 GB question for everyday use: 8 GB is fine for streaming and nothing else on this list.

The short version

For almost every course here the answer is the same machine: the £599 HP OmniBook 7 Aero 13". It is the only option at this price that clears the 16 GB memory floor, and it does it while being under 1 kg with over twelve hours of battery, which is what makes it work for nursing placements and law libraries alike. The £400 HP ChromeBook 15" is the better buy only if the laptop is genuinely for streaming and browsing and your coursework lives on a university machine - it meets no course's minimum on its own. And if you are doing an MBA, game development, film or graphic design, your requirements sit above this budget; spend the extra or borrow the lab machine, but do not buy at £600 and hope.

Your workload comes first.
