Simple, reliable, and light enough to take with you - with nothing you will never use
The best laptop here is not the most capable one. It is the one that does browsing, streaming and video calls without ever becoming a project - no maintenance, no surprises, no sudden slowdown that needs a grandchild to diagnose. Everything else is a cost without a benefit.
At home
Best laptop for simple, reliable browsing, Netflix and video calls under £600 - is HP ChromeBook 15" - Intel® Core™ i3 N305, 8GB, 128GB, FHD
Guide price: £400
This laptop is well-suited for your everyday and entertainment tasks, with up to 11 hours of battery life so it lasts through the day without charging, and a 144 Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and streaming.
For this particular job, ChromeOS is the feature rather than the compromise. Updates happen quietly in the background, there is nothing to maintain, and the things that make Windows laptops slow down over the years mostly do not apply. A 15.6-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) screen is large and clear, which matters far more here than any benchmark.
8 GB of memory and 128 GB of storage would be limiting on a work machine. For browsing, streaming and calls they are not, and the £400 price is the lowest of any recommendation in this guide.
Best laptop for simple, reliable browsing, Netflix and video calls under £900 - is HP Omnibook X Flip 14" Next Gen AI Laptop -AMD Ryzen™ AI 7, 16GB, 1TB, Touchscreen, with pen
Guide price: £899
This laptop is well-suited for your everyday and entertainment tasks, with up to 10 hours and 45 minutes of battery life so it lasts through the day without charging, and a 120 Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and streaming.
The £499 step up buys a considerably nicer object: a colour-accurate 14-inch 3K (2880 x 1800) touchscreen with a pen, 16 GB of memory, 1 TB of storage and 1.39 kg of weight, running Windows 11 Home.
The touchscreen is the part that may genuinely be worth it - tapping and pinching is easier than a trackpad for a lot of people, and the pen is useful for photos and notes. The honest counterweight is that Windows asks more of you than ChromeOS does: more updates, more decisions, more that can go wrong. If the appeal of a laptop is that it just works, the cheaper machine is the better one.
Taking it with you
Holidays, visits, the caravan. A travel laptop with long battery life, and nothing else decides it.
Best laptop for taking on holiday, light with long battery life under £600 - is HP OmniBook 7 Aero 13" Next Gen AI Laptop - AMD Ryzen™ AI 7, 16GB
Guide price: £599
This laptop is well-suited for your travel and commuting tasks, with up to 12 hours and 15 minutes of battery life so you are not hunting for a socket on the move. A sub-1 kg chassis barely registers in a bag, and the 1 TB SSD holds the files you need with you offline.
Under a kilogram is the figure to hold on to. It is roughly 730 g lighter than the Chromebook, which is the difference between a laptop you take and one you decide against at the door. Over twelve hours of battery means a flight or a day out without a charger at all.
The 13.3-inch WQXGA (2560 x 1600) screen is sharp but small - noticeably smaller than the 15.6-inch Chromebook. For something you carry that is the trade, and 16 GB of memory with 1 TB of storage means it is a perfectly capable laptop at home too.
The short version
If the laptop stays at home, buy the £400 HP ChromeBook 15" - the large screen and the complete absence of maintenance are exactly right for the job, and nothing more expensive does it better. If it travels, the £599 HP OmniBook 7 Aero 13" is worth the extra for being under a kilogram with over twelve hours of battery. The £899 HP Omnibook X Flip 14" is a lovely machine and only the right choice if the touchscreen and pen are something you will actually use.
